Many people have helped and encouraged me on the way and I would like to thank them all for their optimism and assistance. The book is based upon my PhD thesis.
I am grateful to my original supervisor Richard de Friend then Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kent for allowing me the space to pursue an obsession despite my own limited knowledge and his heavy schedule of work. The inspiration that caused me to incorporate an analysis of the Wolfenden Committee papers was a lecture at London Guildhall University delivered in by Professor Frank Mort.
He is not aware of this but I thank him all the same. In approximate order of appearance I must first thank Jane Godwin retired legal indexer for her invaluable assistance in helping me understand the intricacies of case law.
I am indebted to my friend Beverley Grey great-niece of Josephine Butler for her generous sifting out of primary source material and for access to her personal collection of Josephine Butler papers. My knowledge of the more recent history of the Josephine Butler Society and its fight to reform the Street Offences Act derives from this source. Many other friends and acquaintances have encouraged me to persevere and given me the benefit of their knowledge and advice.
My journey has also been lightened by Paterson and Co. Members of the Charing Cross Police Clubs and Vice Unit have been friendly and supportive, in particular Ron Holmes, who allowed me to sift through his own collection of papers on prostitution. The police, including Dr Tim Brain, Chief Constable of Gloucestershire, have been generous with their time and helped me to establish a more rounded understanding of the problems surrounding the regulation of prostitution. Attending the National Police Vice conferences has widened my circle of knowledgeable friends and given me the courage to submit articles to the Police Review.
